See the sun in 3-D

April 23, 2007 – 8:16 pm

NASA has just released tones of 3-D images of the Sun takes by its new STEREO telescopes. STEREO was launched in in October 2006. the way it works is that there are two telescopes each orbiting at diffrent places around the Earth (one ahead and one behind). They’re kind of like a pair of eyes in space that can take 3-D pictures.

Here are just one of the images off NASA’s website. You’ll need those funky red-blue glasses to view them.

How to play .dvr-ms files on a Mac

April 17, 2007 – 7:39 pm

Everything is great. You have a nice little computer set up to record your shows, and an Xbox to watch them on your TV. But what happens when you want to watch them on your Mac? Microsoft has discontinued WMP support for the Mac so your pretty much screwed right?

Wrong!

Where theres a will theres a way! Head over to MPlayer’s website and download their media player. It will play those pesky .dvr-ms files.

Introducing Community Quran (Beta)

April 9, 2007 – 12:41 pm

The Qur’an belongs to us all, not just to scholars. What does this mean? This means that you can now search Allah’s words yourself. But I don’t understand Arabic…? That’s okay, because communityquran.com gives 5 different translations for each verse of the Qur’an, so you can understand more. But I want a deeper meaning. Communityquran.com also provides commentary by known scholars such as Yousif Ali. Not only that but, there is also an introduction for each Surah, which includes details on the background of each Surah, and it’s main topics. The most convenient part is that if you are looking for something specific, there is an index tool that has listed all of the Qur’an’s major topics, and linked them to the specific Ayat. And instead of scrolling through each page, or clicking the next button a million times, you can jump straight to any Ayat of any Surah.

For all of those Imams, and Khateebs out there we have a tool for you. Though we are still working on it, there will be a sort of a scrapbook, where you can store all of the Ayat that you want to use in your khutbah.

And for anyone who has found a new interpretation that he wishes to share with the community, communityquran.com has a feature, where the person can add his own comments or translation to an Ayat. Isn’t that great, now everyone can have and share their own interpretation of Al Qur’an.

Google Page Designer

April 9, 2007 – 7:02 am

I meant for this post to go up some time last year, but completly forgot about this draft of a post I made.

Google has got this nifty (not so new anymore) service called Page Creator which allows you to make a webpage/site. Its essentailly a watered down version of Frontpage online.

Whats great about this service is that there are no ads (You can put your own Adsense ads) and You can put in widgets. These widgets are awsome! They’re the exact same things that you would put on your Google homepage inside of your new website. Another great feature is the ability to edit the HTML which many free website hosts don’t let you do.

The only think I dislike is the inability to really change the layout, however this can easily be avoided by just editing the HTML yourself.

Check it out for yourself

University of Maryland: IB v AP

February 26, 2007 – 2:15 pm

The UMD has two nice charts on their site sxplaining how they give credits for AP and IB courses.

For AP all of their courses require at least a 4 to gain credit for most subjects. Some such as english only requre a 3, however 4’s and 5’s get you mroe credit. For IB they all require a 5, 6 or 7.

UMD generally gives more credt to AP than IB. For example, IB english ony recieves 3 credits for a 5, 6 or 7 on the exam whereas AP english gets you 6 credits for a 4, or 5.

UMD doesn’t seem to like SL(standard level) IB classes much either. For a few SL classes they only give a few credits, however for HL(higher level) classes they generally give alot of credit. However, for many classes they give teh same (3-4) credits for the HL and SL class of a subject which kind of gives no incentive to take teh HL class.

AP: 1
IB: 0(unless you like HL classes)

Dashcode for Mac

February 5, 2007 – 6:28 pm

As we all know now, every Mac has this niffyt thing called the Dashboard which has Widgets in it. Apple promises that with their next update to OS X, Leopard, they will include a new tool, Dashcode, to make your very own Widgets!

Well, browsing their site I found a beta of Dashcode, and downloaded it yesterday. Here are some screen shots of me making a simple RSS widget. It will display this website’s posts on the Dashboard so that you never have to type the address into the bar again.

When you open Dashcode you are presented with this:

After selecting “RSS” this came up

To get my site displayed I simply dragged and droped the link to my RSS (this one) into the middle of the new Widget.

Next I hit RUN

And my new widget appeared on my screen for testing. Seemed to work!

Needed to be wider;

And now its done!

Gates to Jobs: Macs get sick too

February 4, 2007 – 12:50 am

Bill Gates said in a recent interview that

“Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine.”

This was in response to a question asked about this Mac ad.

Sure, Vista is more secure than XP, but to say that a Mac is vunerable to a total take over every day is blasfamy!
